Reduction-in-force for Supervisors and Managers
Reductions-in-Force ( RIF) are probably the most difficult experience that any manager or supervisor has to implement in their career. Each manager and supervisor must make very difficult choices about which employees will be impacted by the RIF, advocate for those choices and then deliver the message to employees who will be losing their job. Once the RIF is implemented, managers and supervisors have to deal with the impact on the remaining employees, their peers, as well as themselves. There is no way to make this process simple or painless.
However, the information on this page is designed to provide managers and supervisors with the knowledge and resources they need to manage the RIF process. This page includes information on Managing a Reduction-in-Force, Managing Through Workplace Transitions, Services Provided by Deer Oaks EAP, and Dealing with RIF for Remaining Employees, as well as policies and FAQ’s. If you have additional questions about the RIF process or resources, please contact the Office of State Personnel at 919-807-4800.
